Cantor Benjamin Z. Maissner - Music Director
Benjamin Z. Maissner
is currently Cantor and Music Director of Holy Blossom Temple in Toronto
as well as conductor and Music Director of Lachan.
Cantor Maissner holds a Bachelor of Sacred Music degree
from the Hebrew Union College of Sacred Music and a Master of Music
degree from Temple University, and is renowned for his knowledge of
both secular and liturgical music. He is the master of a variety of
musical styles ranging from Jewish Renaissance and early Hebrew Art
Music to contemporary Canadian, American and Israeli compositions.
A versatile performer himself, Cantor Maissner has
been a featured soloist in such theatres as the Mann Auditorium in Tel
Aviv, and New York's Carnegie Hall. He has also served as musical consultant
for documentaries such as To Mend the World and The Man Who
Hid Anne Frank by the award-winning Canadian filmmaker Harry Rasky.
Cantor Maissner currently serves on the executive board
of the Cantors' Assembly; (Conservative Movement) and as vice-president
of the American Conference of Cantors (Reform Movement). He teaches
vocal and cantorial skills and is the National Chairman of the Certification
Program of the American Conference of Cantors.
Cantor Maissner teaches and lectures extensively. He
has been cantor-in-residence at Hebrew Union College in New York, Cincinnati
and Jerusalem. In March 2001 he was recognized with an honorary Doctorate
of Music from Hebrew Union College.
Cantor Maissner has recently introduced a new series
of CDs, entitled The Musical Legacy of Holy Blossom
Temple , celebrating the musical traditions of Canada's oldest synagogue,
where he has been Music Director for over twenty years.
